In recent months we’ve been very busy working closely with Cusworth Hall and Park in Doncaster to develop a very special project called The Cusworth Project to help promote the unique heritage of the Hall and its facilities as a wedding venue.

The Cusworth Project involved over 23 of the region’s best wedding suppliers working alongside Cusworth’s museum curators to create creative items for a wedding photoshoot based on the museums collections.

I’ll be bringing you the full story in stages in coming weeks and featuring some of the suppliers in more detail, but for now here is the downloadable e-brochure explaining what we did and featuring some of the best images from the shoot.

You may or may not have noticed our absence from this blog for quite a while. Well, we’ve been really busy developing our business and creating our new shop/studio/office at 359 Abbeydale Road, Sheffield.

We’ll be spending the next month updating this website, adding new pages for our venue styling, hire services and sweet displays & dessert bars, and showcasing more images of some of the wonderful weddings and events we’ve worked on recently….

So, for the time being we wanted to give you a sneaky peak into our new shop…..

We have changed our name to Hansley Beard Events & Wedding Design Studio, as designing is what we do best ...

Based in Sheffield’s coolest Retro Antiques quarter and near Abbeydale Picture House, we’ve gone for a Victorian parlour meets French salon look for our new space.

It has been hard thinking of what to call it! Is it a shop? Is it a studio? Is it an office? We’ve decided it’s all three!

It’s a studio as it showcases my wedding and event design work including beautiful images from my previous weddings and events by amazing photographers and featuring some of Sheffield’s best suppliers.

Soon I’ll be sat in there with the sewing machine and crafty stuff making things I’m sure so it will be a busy working space.

It also showcases a selection of our vintage china and glassware available to hire as well as some of our quirky props (the rest is stored above the shop).

We’ll also be aiming to get the attention of passers-by with beautiful window displays.

It’s a shop as we will be gradually stocking and selling exclusive wedding and events decor items from specialist suppliers, specialising in items made from authentic vintage bits and pieces and items that aren’t readily available locally, but all with a modern twist and twang!

It’s my office as I’ll be sitting there with my laptop liaising with clients, doing emails and making calls! It’s also a place for you to come for consultations and meetings in a relaxed and vintage environment.

Our new desk features photos from our vintage wedding photo collection.

Over the Summer we’ll also be running a series of vintage crafty workshops, with a wedding or event theme, hosted by us with cake and tea in china, and taught by some of Sheffield’s up and coming creatives! These workshops will also be available for hen parties and small group parties.

At present we are open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (10.00am-5.30pm) but appointments are available at other times if it’s easier for you, including evenings.

The full address is 359 Abbeydale Road, Sheffield, S7 1FS. We are next to the retro shops,Timewarp and The Pad.

I look forward to seeing you all there!

A big thanks to Jon from S6 Photography for these great photos.

In Part 2 of my blog posts about different types of wedding ceremonies, I would like to talk about my own interfaith wedding to Robert in 2008.

I am a Buddhist and Robert is a Christian. Technically there isn’t a wedding ceremony in my tradition of Buddhism so it wasn’t a case of doing a Christian service and then a Buddhist ceremony, so we had to find a way to bring them together that we would both feel comfortable with and find meaningful in terms of the words we were planning to say to each other.

Robert attends St Mark’s Church in Broomhill, Sheffield, so we approached the Vicar there and he agreed that we could have the traditional Christian church wedding ceremony but also try to bring some Buddhist elements into the service. We incorporated these particularly in the music and we found Bible readings and hymns that had words that would also resonate with someone of the Buddhist faith.

We chose ‘wisdom’ as our theme as this was common to both faith traditions and all of the hymns were about love and community, again important values that we share. We asked a friend of ours who is the Director of Yorkshire and Humber Faiths Forum to deliver our wedding address as we knew he would say something relevant not just to us both, but also to our guests who were from many different faiths.

As Robert is very familiar with Church liturgy he knew what legal elements of the traditional church wedding service had to be kept in and he re-wrote the other sections to make them more relevant to us both (believe me, we spent hours debating this!).

After I had walked down the aisle, the choir sang a chant called ‘Praise to Wisdom’ written by the 11th century Christian writer and composer Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). Even though this was a Christian song, these words are also very familiar to a Buddhist and very similar to some Buddhist texts, so it is often the case that readings or songs can be found that sit comfortably with the faiths of both bride and groom.
Here are the words to O VIRTUS SAPIENTIAE (Praise to Wisdom) by Hildegard of Bingen:

“YOU POWER OF WISDOM
THAT CIRCLED CIRCLING
AND EMBRACING ALL
IN A COURSE THAT IS FILLED WITH LIFE
YOU HAVE THREE WINGS
ONE SOARS INTO THE HEIGHTS
ANOTHER HAS MOISTURE FROM THE EARTH
THE THIRD FLIES ALL AROUND
ALL PRAISE TO YOU, WISDOM, AS IS YOUR DUE.”

During the signing of the register we had a piece of music, based on a Buddhist wisdom text about Emptiness, played on a Japanese flute.

Although Robert and I wanted the ceremony to reflect our faiths, we also wanted our wedding to reflect other aspects of our lives such as our shared British culture and traditions. We filled the church with candles, seasonal flowers and sweet-smelling herbs and had some traditional fiddle music to play me down the aisle and during our garden reception. I also made ribbon sticks for the children to carry.

After the ceremony we walked from the church to the church green through a very wide aisle of happy guests throwing yellow marigold petals at us. I chose the colour yellow as it symbolises wisdom in Buddhism.

Our reception was a picnic on the church green, complete with bunting, ribbons and an elegantly decorated bridal frame which we posed in for photographs. I also incorporated some old wedding traditions and made my own wedding bouquet following the Victorian language of flowers ~ particularly using Sage which symbolises ‘wisdom’.

It was an amazing day and our guests included our friends and family from all walks of life and faiths!

Of course, being into ‘vintage’ I wore a French lace wedding dress and used my mother’s vintage crockery collection for the flower arrangements. My bridesmaids wore traditional wrist corsages and carried vintage handbags. I also added some art deco sparkle!

Robert influenced the design of the wedding cake - hundreds of Galaxy minstrels (though I of course insisted that some of them be covered in edible gold!)

I’d like to end our wedding story with a photo of our ushers - my two step-sons, Robert’s godson and my step-son’s friend. Just because you have a ‘faith’ wedding doesn’t mean you can’t add your own twist on things. We insisted that the ushers wore what they felt reflected them - in this case they chose rock t-shirts and shades!

Our wedding really was a true reflection of all the different aspects of our personalities!

Are you an interfaith couple? Are you finding it difficult to decide whether to have a religious ceremony, a civil ceremony, a blessing or a Humanist ceremony? If you think it would be helpful to talk it through with someone, Robert is available for a free initial consultation. If you wish, he can then help you with writing and developing your ceremony or vows and/or by officiating at your wedding. Robert is a former Church of England vicar and now a Equalities and Diversity trainer specialising in Religion and Belief. He works for a national charity and is involved in interfaith work at local, regional and national level. He also conducts religious ceremonies and blessings. Feel free to contact us for more information.

People are always asking me more about my background and the other things I do in my life, so I’ve decided to talk more about these things on my blog and as a context for my next few blog posts which will be on the subject of religious and interfaith weddings, civil ceremonies and blessings. First a bit of my story and how this links to the title of this blog:

As well as running Hansley Beard Event Planning & Design, I work as a Local Faith Network Officer for Sheffield Faiths Forum. Our logo is a bridge as this represents most of the work that we do - creating a bridge for faith communities to work together with each other and with local partners and organisations, responding to practical issues city-wide and within the local neighbourhoods of Sheffield.

We support faith communities to ensure that their extensive skills and experience are valued and utilised and that their voice is heard when important decisions are being made. We do this by bringing members from different faiths together to talk about local issues, organising events, providing training, organising projects and producing information, but most importantly by helping them to network and build strong and sustainable working relationships. A couple of weeks ago it was national Inter Faith Week for which we completed a successful programme of events in Sheffield.

I have been intensely involved in interfaith work and faith communities for my entire life – I was brought up a Christian, studied Religious Studies and Islamic Studies alongside Archaeology, practised Paganism for a while and converted to Buddhism when I was 24. I then lived and studied at a Buddhist Retreat Centre, was ordained as a Buddhist nun for 4 years and taught Buddhist meditation and stress management for 7 years. People are always asking me why I seem so calm at my events, so hopefully some of my experience rubbed off on me!

I am married to Robert who is a Christian, a former Church of England vicar and now a Equalities and Diversity trainer specialising in Religion and Belief. He works for a national charity and is involved in interfaith work at local, regional and national level. He also conducts religious ceremonies and blessings.

He specialises in working with interfaith couples (of which we were one!) and couples who are struggling to navigate between the usual wedding ceremonies on offer, whether religious or civil. He is renowned for helping couples to find the right way forward for them. When we decided to get married we knew we could rely on my event management skills and his expertise at writing the appropriate ceremony, to create a wedding that was perfect for us both.

We both know from our own experience that people don’t always fit into clear categories and when there are two of you to think about, it can get quite complex and intense trying to decide what kind of ceremony reflects both of you. We also know that sometimes you may see yourself as quite spiritual or as having strong positive values. You may not necessarily want a religious ceremony and yet find the civil ceremony lacking in meaning and not saying enough of what you want to say. You might not be religious at all, but want your day to be happy and meaningful both for you and for your friends and family.

In the next few blog posts I’ll be giving examples of some different types of ceremonies and weddings Robert and I have been involved with. We will start with our own interfaith Christian/Buddhist wedding, followed by a Humanist wedding and then a Christian/Hindu Wedding.

Feel free to contact us for more information.

One of my brides from last year, Sara, contacted me recently to see if she could hire some of our decor items to jazz up the venue for her friend’s hen night in Sheffield. Here is Sara’s story about it, interspersed with some of her images of the night:

“My friend Sarah agreed to have a ‘hen night’ so long as it was only referred to as Ladies Night and that there was glamour, heels and cocktails. Silly games, L plates and such like were all banned!

I booked a table at the now very famous Milestone for some posh nosh before we moved on to a private venue for homemade cocktails and dancing. The party venue is a place often used by Sarah for small private parties so myself and some other friends really wanted it to look different, and make it special for Sarah as a surprise.

I remembered that Jenn has been busy getting lots of wedding and party decor and trimmings together for hire so asked if we could come take a peek at what she’d got. Jenn asked us to think of a theme we might like to try. As the venue is quite dark and looks great with candlelight we decided to go for a Middle Eastern theme of fabrics and candles, a Sex in The City 2 vibe.

When we got to Jenn’s studio she had picked out some amazing pieces for us. Brass plates, gorgeous deep red glasses that could hold tea lights, various sized lanterns, nets of fairy lights and fabrics.

We also had a good look at all the other wonderful vintage pieces in Jenn’s collection for future reference, and because it was fun to have a nosey round!

On the night, we decorated the venue in two hours and it certainly had the desired effect. Sarah loved it, so much so she wants to hire some pieces for her wedding reception.

The photo’s I took don’t really do it justice, but the main thing is how much enjoyment and wow factor it added to the night.
We also hired from Jenn a picture frame so we could take some silly pictures and everyone had lots of fun with that.

Thanks Jenn, and I’ll be back!”

Sara hired red tealight glasses, Moroccan lanterns, cream enamel lanterns, brass plates, fabrics and net lights. All available to hire from our Sheffield studio.
Most of the time we’re running around at weddings making sure things go smoothly for everyone else. But now and then we get to be at a wedding as a guest to enjoy the day, enjoy nice food and drink and have a wee dance! Last weekend Robert and I went to Malvern to witness the wedding of his godson Chris to Rachel. Being the 25th September the weather could have turned out either way but as luck would have it, it was the most beautiful day with a clear blue sky and the perfect setting for this autumn wedding of teal green and orange. I wanted to share some of our pictures here as the bride Rachel, of Dimond Photos, was one the brilliant photographers at our own wedding:
After a feast of chip butties and an evening of fun, Alyx and Jonny went down the lighted slipway to get on their charted narrowboat, which had been arranged to take them down river to York

A few final comments from Alyx and Jonny:
“Because we’d chosen to have the reception at home rather than at a hired venue, we needed someone to manage the day for us, from the reception onwards, which was a huge undertaking. Hansley Beard took on the challenge brilliantly, which included managing suppliers, prompting our toastmaster, coordinating lighting, cueing the caterers, and many, many more things! Initially we were worried that we were asking too much – but their positive and constructive approach rid us of those fears straight away. And that’s a great example of why we’re so grateful to have found Hansley Beard – at every single step along the way, they really went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we’d dreamed of, and without once making us feel like we were asking too much. The reception went more perfectly than we’d ever hoped it could, and we loved every minute of it – and so much of that is thanks to Hansley Beard!”

We wish Alyx and Jonny a very happy life together and thanks for letting us be part of your special day!

The Garden Reception:
Alyx and Jonny said “It was really important to us to have a relaxed, informal atmosphere for our guests once they reached the reception, and the décor played a huge role in achieving that. Our blue and white theme was present (especially in the dinner tent), but we also wanted to add in some other colours to make the garden as summery and colourful as possible. Using ethically sourced materials was also important to us, but that of course adds an extra dimension to the search. Hansley Beard was fantastic at finding all sorts of options for us to choose from, and excellent at turning our vague ideas into gorgeous reality!”

Here’s what Hansley Beard did to achieve this look:

We decorated the garden trees with white and coloured paper Chinese lanterns

Using shepherd hooks and wooden and metal lanterns from Hansley Beard’s Hire collection, we created decorative walkways, walls and flowerbeds

Guests arrived for the drinks reception and an ice cream from Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream whilst being entertained by a Jazz Quartet

Time for cutting the wonderful hedgehog themed cake, made by one of Alyx and Jonny’s talented guests

Time for the Wedding Breakfast. Table Plan designed by Jessica Harvey at JK Harvey Design., on one of our easels

Working with Sesame Catering from Sheffield, we decorated the reception tables with colbalt blue wine glasses, tealight holders and ribbon around the napkins. For the favours Alyx had been busy shopping in Singapore and brought back colourful fans for the ladies whilst the gentleman each received a lottery ticket in a Chinese envelope

Flowers were by Celia from Flowers by Design in Easingwold. The marquee was decorated with blue and white bunting and the tables were named after key places in Alyx and Jonny’s life

After dinner, the bridal party went for a stroll down the garden

Alongside the second marquee, which was allocated for the later dancing and entertainment, we set up a chill area with deck chairs and bunting, for guests to relax on the riverbank

Alyx and Jonny go down to the riverside to catch the evening light…
As a wedding planner I like to be very hands-on and I often get asked by brides and grooms not only to help develop their ideas for their wedding decor but also to do the actual practical setting up for the wedding. Initially Alyx and Jonny got in touch with us to see if we could work alongside their wedding caterers from Sesame to help to decorate the reception tables. Alyx and Jonny were about to go to work in Singapore for 6 months and needed help to get things sorted whilst they were away (with frequent email contact!). In the end, Hansley Beard also sourced and prepared many of the decor products relating to their ideas for the entire outdoor site and sourced and set up the outdoor lighting, setting up the day before and on the morning of the wedding and going back the day after to pack it all away again. However this was no ordinary wedding as Alyx had arranged to have their outdoor wedding reception in her parents’ beautiful three-tiered garden in the idyllic village of Newton-on-Ouse in York, going down to the River Ouse.
This meant bringing in everything from scratch to create a wonderful reception party for their 80 guests. Alyx and Jonny booked 2 Capri Marquees from Perfect Day Marquee Hire and we set about working out the spacing and logistics for catering, power, lighting and PA, visiting the garden and liaising with Alyx’s parents. We liaised with all the relevant suppliers before the wedding and then managed everything on the day (and night!) to ensure it all worked together smoothly in the right place at the right time! After months of measurements, KVAs and T-connectors, everything came together for what turned out to be a perfect sunny day with blue sky and fluffy white clouds. A big thank you especially to Paul from CVC Hire who came and set up the PA for both tents and hooked up all the electrics to the generator. Also to the members of our set-up team on the day, Emma Willis from The Wedding Daze and Rosa Shutt.

For now here are a few taster images from the wedding ceremony stage of the wedding day:

Alyx and Jonny were married at All Saints’ Church, 5 minutes walk from Alyx’s parents’ garden, arriving in an amazingly quirky pedicab from the Durham Pedicab company and the guests arriving in an old vintage bus from the Yorkshire Heritage Bus Company.

Alyx and Jonny said, “Even though we did a lot of planning and preparation before moving out to Singapore for six months, we found that decisions about décor and other details couldn’t be made any earlier than the months just before the wedding. Because of this we desperately needed help back in the UK to coordinate it all – and that’s where Hansley Beard was such an enormous help. They really eased the burden by doing all the researching and sourcing of décor details, which we simply couldn’t have done from Asia! Their previous experience and knowledge of where to source things was also a huge benefit – on our own we would never have found half the things we’d wanted when we first imagined the wedding.”

Tomorrow we’ll be showcasing the decor and the wonderful garden reception party so see you back here soon!
